I got a call from Steve Twork aka Shallow Rio last friday and he was staying in Maysville KY over the weekend before driving his semi to Dayton on Monday.
He said since he was so close he would come to my house on sunday and show me how to make a box call. Man he knows what he is doing. He showed me a bunch of little things to do and NOW it's not so hard to make a box call.
I still got some things to work on but I got a really good idea of how to do it now. The coolest thing to do is the checkering. It takes awhile to do but isn't really all that hard.
I do need some better chisels though

. The checkering is done mainly with an exacto knife. He told me that he has no problem with me making my calls to look like his except the paddle. It won't be hard to change the paddle though.
Now he has me hooked on making them

. I was going about it all wrong. Just need a few simple tools and PATIENCE

.
Here is the box laid out for the checkering.

Here it is afterwards. The other side of the box is actually better. I didn't make the cuts as deep.
Here is the call all done. I used a cherry paddle and bottom with a poplar box. I like the sound of it. One side starts off with a really high pitch and drops off clear. the other doesn't start of as high but sounds really good. I was going to tune it a little but think I will leave it alone.
